Abstract

Teachers occupy a central position in ensuring that students learn in classrooms that are safe, respectful, and supportive of their overall development. This paper examines teachers’ liabilities in protecting the rights of children and discusses the implications for creating safe classrooms in secondary schools in Nigeria. It highlights the legal, professional, and moral responsibilities of teachers in safeguarding students from abuse, discrimination, neglect, and other forms of rights violations within the school setting. The paper also explores how teachers’ actions, attitudes, and adherence to professional ethics influence the protection of children’s rights and the promotion of a secure learning environment. In addition, the discussion identifies key challenges that hinder teachers from effectively fulfilling these responsibilities, including limited awareness of child rights policies, inadequate training, weak institutional support, and poor enforcement of educational regulations.
