ANALYSIS OF CHILD ABUSE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN NIGERIA AND IMPLICATIONS FOR CHILD DEVELOPMENT IN ANAMBRA STATE

The numerous cases of child abuse within secondary schools remain significant concerns in Nigeria, threatening the safety, dignity, and educational development of students. This opinion paper analyzes the various forms of violence and child abuse prevalent in Nigerian secondary schools and discusses their implications for protecting the legal rights of children. The analysis emphasizes the need for stronger legal enforcement, improved child protection policies in schools, teacher training on safeguarding practices, and the establishment of effective monitoring and reporting systems. It also highlights the importance of collaboration among government agencies, school authorities, parents, and civil society organizations in creating safe learning environments. The paper concludes that addressing violence in secondary schools is essential for upholding children’s legal rights and ensuring that educational institutions remain spaces that promote safety, dignity, and holistic development.
