Abstract

This study investigated the knowledge retention benchmarks that existed within the University of Calabar and Akwa Ibom State University. Specifically, the study aimed to determine the influence of documentation systems, succession planning, digital knowledge repositories, and knowledge sharing culture on the sustainability of these two universities. A correlational survey research design was adopted to answer the four research questions and test the four hypotheses that were formulated. A sample of 385 staff members from these two universities was obtained using the Taro Yamane formula. Data was collected from these participants using the Knowledge Retention Benchmarks and Institutional Sustainability Questionnaire (KRBISQ). The data was analyzed using descriptive and correlation statistics at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the research study indicated that the majority of staff members from both universities had experienced the presence of knowledge retention benchmarks within their institutions. Furthermore, the research study revealed that there were significant relationships between knowledge documentation systems, knowledge succession planning, digital knowledge repositories, and knowledge sharing culture with the sustainability of the institutions. Generally, it was found that there was a significant relationship between knowledge retention benchmarks and institutional sustainability within both the University of Calabar and the Akwa Ibom State University. Based on the findings, it is recommended that both universities should implement various policies and procedures that enhance their retention of knowledge and improve their long-term sustainability.
