Abstract

The study investigated the influence of work motivation (WM) and organisation-based self-esteem (OBSE) in predicting organisational commitment (OC) among primary school teachers in Awka, Anambra State. A total of one hundred and nineteen (119) teachers (40 males, and 79 females, mean age = 31.47yrs, SD = .98) participated in study. Three instruments were used for data collection namely: Motivation at work scale, organization-based self-esteem scale, and organizational commitment scale. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis with stepwise modelling was employed to test the hypothesis. The results revealed that work motivation significantly and positively predicted organizational commitment. Furthermore, organisation-based self-esteem failed to significantly predict organisational commitment. The results of the study highlight the importance of work motivation and organisation-based self-esteem in enhancing teachers’ commitment to their jobs/schools. Limitations of the study were also emphasised and future research directions suggested.
