Abstract

The study investigated the strategies for managing students’ classroom undesirable behaviours in Secondary School in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State. Two research questions guided the study. The researcher adopted descriptive research design. The population of the study comprised 628 teachers in Public Secondary Schools in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State. Instrument for data collection is structured questionnaire by the researcher which was validated by three experts, two from Education management and policy and one from the measurement and evaluation unit all in Faculty of Education, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. The reliability test was conducted on the teachers in 10 Secondary Schools in Enugu State who were not included in the population of the study. Cronbach Alpha reliability co-efficient valued scored yielded 0.80 and 0.82 for cluster B1 and B2 respectively with the overall co-efficient obtained score of 0.84 for the internal consistency which was deemed high for the study. Data collected were analysed using mean to answer the research questions. The findings revealed that counseling, reward, gift items, praise, punishment, encouragement, change of students seating position, prohibiting students from break, name calling, suspension, creating good channel of communication, reporting the student to parents/guardian among others are strategies applied by teachers for managing students’ classroom undesirable behaviours in Secondary schools in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State. Based on the findings the following recommendation were made among others that class teachers should always assist students with undesirable behaviour by knowing the cause and proffer solution for the student to change to desirable behaviour.
