Abstract

This study focused on the perceived impact of provost’s motivational strategies on staff job performance: a study of Peaceland College of Education, Enugu. Four research objectives guided this study and they sought to: determine the extent to which provosts’ use of clinical supervision motivates staff for effective job performance; ascertain the extent to which provosts’ provision of in-service training for staff motivates staff for effective job performance; determine the extent to which provosts’ use of promotion and other incentives motivates staff for effective job performance; and determine the extent to which provosts’ provision of conducive working environment motivates staff for effective job performance in Peaceland College of Education, Enugu. The study adopted survey research design. The population of the study comprises of staff from the office of the provost/registrar, Peaceland College of Education, and teaching (lecturers) and non-teaching staff of the college, numbering 70, all of which were sampled for the study. Simple random sampling technique was used for sampling. Questionnaire was used for data collection and mean rating was used for data analysis. The study revealed that to a high extent, provost use clinical supervision, in-service training, promotion and incentives, and conducive working environment as strategies to motivate staff for effective job performance in Peaceland College of Education, Enugu. It was recommended that the current extent of utilization of promotion and incentives by provost should be maintained and in addition, the provost should introduce penalties for erring staff so as to serve as deterrent to others.
