INFLUENCE OF CORRUPTION ON THE STANDARDS OF SECONDARY SCHOOL EDUCATION IN UDI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF ENUGU STATE

Abstract

This study was carried out to investigate how corruption influences the standard of secondary school Education in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State. This research adopted a survey research design. The area of study is Udi Local Government Area. The population for the study comprised 9,050 secondary school students as well as 695 teachers in the zone.  A simple and sampling random technique was used to select 160 respondents. A questionnaire is a research instrument consisting of series of questions. The questionnaire developed was subjected to face validation. The instrument used was validated by three experts; in the field of educational foundations and curriculum in the faculty of education. A test- retest method was used to ascertain the reliability of the study instrument. The data collected were calculated using Spearman Correlation coefficient. After the calculation, the instrument was discovered to have a reliability coefficient of 0.98. Data collected was analyzed using mean and grand mean to answer the research questions. Findings from the study revealed that; The standard of education in a less corrupt school is higher than the standard of education in a more corrupt secondary school. Lack of good remuneration, non-transparency and economic instability are part of the causes of the fallen standard of education in secondary schools. It was recommended among others that; adequate encouragement should be given to teachers. Teachers should be motivated so that they would be able to be committed in carrying out their responsibilities as responsible teachers.
