TEACHER PREPARATION IN A PERIOD OF SOCIO-POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC UNCERTAINTY

Abstract

This study investigated Teacher Preparation in a period of socio-political and economic uncertainty in public secondary schools in Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State. Descriptive survey research design was adopted and was guided by two research questions. Simple random sampling technique was used to draw 30% of the population of 114 teachers from the entire population of 228 teachers in public secondary schools in Ideato North education zone of the state. The instrument used for data collection was titled “Teacher Preparation in a period of socio-political and Economic uncertainty (TPPSPEU) structured on a four- point scale. Statistical means was used to analyze the data collected from research questions. The instrument was validated by three experts all from faculty of education, Imo State University. The result of the analysis revealed that lack of suitable teaching materials, inadequate infrastructural facilities, lack of motivation of teachers among others affect teachers to execute work effectively. The study also revealed that teacher always prepare their work but lack of necessary materials to prepare for their work in public secondary schools in Ideato North Local Government Areas of Imo State affects them. It was therefore recommended among others that teachers in public secondary schools in the area should be encouraged by the government by providing appropriate instructional materials, adequate infrastructural facilities as well as motivating teachers by paying them well and when due.
