Abstract

The aim of this study is to raise awareness on the dangers of building collapses in the country. Buildings are collapsing every day in Nigeria with the root causes hinged on the use of substandard materials, faulty foundations, use of quacks in building industry, poor building design to lack of building maintenance, among others. The paper tried to explain what is building and building collapses. Notable building collapses in Nigeria were high-lighted. Types and causes of building collapses in Nigeria were also discussed. The dangers and effects of building collapses were equally touched. Preventive measures against building collapses in Nigeria were exhaustively elucidated. Building collapses mitigation strategies by adult educators were equally mentioned. The paper concluded and recommended that the Federal Government of Nigeria should enact a new building code that will make it mandatory for the general public to employ the services of qualified and registered building professionals, among others.
