Abstract

University education is the type of education obtained in tertiary institutions that offer a wide range of skilled labour to the Nigerian students. It is one of the places that is responsible for human capital development. Some of these universities are situated in different parts of the country. Some are privately owned; some are state owned while yet others are owned by the federal government. Both the state and federal universities are referred to as public universities. Those owned by private individuals, cooperate bodies and religious bodies are called private universities. The sponsorship and management are done by the owners while all of them are under the directives and policy making body commonly referred to as the National Union of Universities (NUC). The NUC does the accreditation of courses for all the universities and also does intermittent accreditation to ensure quality assurance in all the universities established is maintained. This positions the universities to focus on the teaching, training and research so as to produce high skilled manpower needs that competes favorably in the labour market. Stemming from these expositions, this study unveils the concept of management, university education, objectives of university education, management of university education, challenges facing effective management of university education and the possible solutions.
