HEADTEACHERS’ COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES FOR ENHANCING TEACHERS' JOB PERFORMANCE IN PUBLIC PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN ANAMBRA STATE

Abstract

The position of a headteacher comes with lots of responsibilities and commitments to ensure efficiency and productivity in the school administration. This study examined communication strategies for enhancing teachers’ job performance in public primary schools in Anambra State. The study was guided by one research question and one hypothesis tested at 0.05 significance level. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consisted of 9559 teachers in primary schools in Anambra State. Multi-stage sampling techniques were used to draw a sample size of 600 teachers representing the entire population. The instrument for data collection was ‘Questionnaire on Headteachers' Communication Strategies and Teachers’ Performance (QHCSTP). Mean, standard deviation and t-test were used for data analysis and the hypothesis tested at 0.05 level of significance.  The findings of the study revealed that headteachers’ communication strategy enhances teachers’ job performance in public primary schools in Anambra State. The study also revealed that there is no significant difference in the mean ratings of male and female teachers on headteachers’ communication strategy for enhancing teachers’ job performance in public primary schools in Anambra State. Based on the findings, the study recommended that the government should encourage headteachers to organize regular staff meetings for proper and timely dissertation of information to teachers for regular updates to enhance their job performance in public primary schools in Anambra State.
