RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FAMILY SIZE AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ANAMBRA STATE

Family size is a critical determinant of students’ academic achievement in Anambra State. The study examined the relationship between family size and academic achievement of public secondary school students in Anambra State. The study was guided by one research questions and one hypothesis. This study adopted correlational research design. The population of the study comprised 5,110 Senior Secondary School Two (SS II) students in Awka Education Zone of Anambra State. Proportionate stratified random sampling technique was employed to draw a sample size of 511 students. Family demographic Questionnaire and academic achievement of students obtained from the school records were used for data collection. Research questions were anlysized using Pearson product moment correlation co-efficient and Hypotheses tested using independent t-test. Findings of the study revealed there was no significant relationship between family size and academic achievement of public secondary school students in Anambra State. It was recommended among others that Parents continue to provide moral, emotional, and educational support to students regardless of family size as these supports can enhance learning outcomes.
