Abstract

The study investigated the extent of teachers’ participation in decision-making for effective job performance in secondary schools in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra state. Four research questions guided the study. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. Population for the study comprised 542 teachers in all the 19 public secondary schools in Awka South Local Government of Anambra State. There was no need for sampling since the population was not large and it can be managed by the researcher. Questionnaire designed by the researcher was the instrument used for data collection. The instrument was validated by three experts in the Faculty of Education, all from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. In addition, mean score was adopted for data analysis. From the data analysis, it was discovered that the extent of teachers’ participation in curriculum and instruction, maintenance of discipline, school planning and school budgeting for effective job performance in secondary schools in Awka South Local Government Area were low. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that the extent of teachers’ participation in decision-making for effective job performance in secondary schools in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra state was low. This means that teacher job performance in the area would not be effective.  Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended among others that teachers need to be actively involved in decision-making in their schools to encourage, motivate and utilize their wide range of experience and personal characteristics, and capability.
