INSTRUCTIONAL SUPERVISION AND CLASS DISCIPLINE AS PREDICTORS OF ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN AWKA EDUCATION ZONE OF ANAMBRA STATE

The purpose of the study was to examine the joint predictive values of instructional supervision and class discipline on the academic performance of secondary school students in Awka Education Zone of Anambra State. One research question guided the study. This study was carried out in Awka education zone of Anambra State. It adopted the co-relational research design. The population of the study was made up of 1,694 teachers in public secondary schools in Awka education zone of Anambra state. The entire population was studied. Data were collected with two instruments developed by the researcher. The instruments were validated by three experts. The reliability of the instruments was established through a trial- test in public secondary schools in Enugu State. The reliability indices of the instruments using Cronbach alpha method were 0.92 and 0.85 for each of the instruments respectively. The researcher administered the instruments directly on the respondents and the Pearson’s Product Moment correlation coefficient was used in the data analysis. The result showed that instructional supervision and class discipline are strong joint predictors of academic performance of students in secondary schools. The researcher recommended that workshops/seminars should be organized for teachers on the importance of instructional supervision so as to enhance students’ academic performance.
