PRINCIPALS’ SUPERVISORY PRACTICES FOR TEACHERS’ JOB SATISFACTION IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN AWKA NORTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT OF ANAMBRA STATE

Abstract

The paper investigated principals’ supervisory practices for teachers’ job satisfaction in public secondary schools in Awka North local government of Anambra State. The study was hinged on two research questions and two hypotheses. The population of the study comprised of 10 public secondary schools in Awka North LGA consisting of 10 principals and 176 teachers. The study adopted descriptive research survey design. The instrument titled “Principals’ Supervisory Practices for Teachers’ Job Satisfaction Scale” (PSPTJSS) was designed by the researcher. The validity of the instrument was achieved through the use of experts in the related field. The reliability of the instrument was done using Cronbach Alpha method. The reliability co-efficient of 0.89 was realized which is adequate for the study. Administration of the instrument was carried out by the researcher and two research assistants. Distribution and retrieval of the instrument lasted for three weeks. Out of 186 copies of questionnaire copies of the instrument distributed, 184 copies were recovered giving 98% rate of return which is considered good for the study. Mean statistics was used to answer the research questions.  It is the finding of the study that demonstration supervisory practices are not being practiced by the principals in public secondary schools in Awka North LGA of Anambra State. Based on the findings, it is recommended that principals be educated on the relevance of demonstration supervisory practices to enable them do the needful for teachers’ job performance.
