NEGLECTS OF TEACHERS’ INTEREST AND ITS PERCEIVED IMPACTS ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ENUGU EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF ENUGU STATE

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the neglect of teachers’ interest and its impact on students’ academic achievement in influence of teacher motivation on academic performance of students in secondary schools in Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State. Three research objectives guided this study and they sought to determine the extent to which: lack of in-service training for teachers influences academic achievements of students; lack of facilities and conducive teaching environment influences academic achievement of students; and to ascertain the extent to which irregular payment of salaries and wages of teachers influences academic achievement of students in secondary schools in Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State. The study adopted the survey research design. The population for the study consisted of all the teachers in public secondary schools in the study area numbering 402. 20% of the population (80 teachers) were sampled for the study. Data were collected with the aid of a structured questionnaire and mean rating was used for analysing the responses to the research questions. The study revealed among others that the lack of in-service training, facilities and conducive environment as well as irregular payment of salaries and wages, to a great extent, hamper academic achievements of secondary school students in the study area.  The study recommended, among other things, widening the scope of in-service training currently available to teacher and ensure utmost conducive working environment are provided for teachers
