Abstract

This paper will discuss how a school library program can contribute to the development of a reading culture among the students in secondary schools in Anambra state, Nigeria. Although there is ample evidence that reading can accrue academic and personal growth, low reading culture among the learners persists and it is worsened by a lack of usable libraries and interesting programs. The mixed-methods were used to collect data involving 300 students and 12 librarians in six secondary schools within the three senatorial zones of Anambra State. In identifying the types, frequency, and the effect of the library programs the study identifies shortages regarding the resources and an untrained staff as elements that place challenges on the programs. The findings indicate a large positive contribution to the reading engagement of students by well-organised library activities like book clubs and reading contest. The recommendations to enhance library programs are more funding, training of librarians, and the reform of policies. This paper will add to the discussion on literacy promotion interventions in Nigerian schools.
