INNOVATIVE TEACHING STRATEGIES: A MEANS OF PROMOTING BUSINESS EDUCATION STUDENTS’ SKILL ACQUISITION FOR JOB CREATION

The need to equip students with skills for self-reliance necessitated this study. The study ascertained innovative teaching strategies as a means of promoting business education students’ skill acquisition for job creation. Two research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted descriptive survey research design and 111 business educators were studied without sampling. A structured questionnaire which was validated by three experts in the field of business education and measurement and evaluation unit was used for data collection. The reliability of the instrument was established using pilot study and analysis carried out using Cronbach alpha statistics which yielded correlation coefficients of.87 and .89 respectively for clusters B1 to B2 and overall reliability coefficient of .88 obtained. Mean was used to answer the research questions, standard deviation was used to ascertain the homogeneity of respondents’ mean ratings, and t-test used to test the hypotheses. Findings showed that business educators to a low extent initiate model while they adopt cases studies to promote business education students’ skill acquisition for job creation to a low extent. Findings also revealed that years of working experience was not a significant factor influencing the opinions of business educators regarding the extent they initiate models and adopt case studies in this regard. Based on the findings, the researcher concluded that business educators do not adequately adopt innovative strategies to promote their students’ skill acquisition for job creation in Anambra State. It was recommended that business educators should jettison their traditional teaching method and adopt more innovative teaching strategies such as models and case studies in their instructional deliveries so as enhance students’ acquisition of skills for job creation.
