INFLUENCE OF BAD GOVERNANCE AND CYBERCRIME ON STUDENTS' ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AT THE TERTIARY EDUCATION LEVEL

This work is on influence of bad governance and cybercrime on student's’ academic performance at the tertiary education level. The study aimed at examining the Influence of bad governance and cybercrime on undergraduate students’ academic performance. The study was guided by four (4) research questions and adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population comprised of 1273 two hundred level regular undergraduate students from the Faculty of Education NAU for the 2022/2023 academic session. Simple random sampling technique was adopted in sampling 14 respondents from the ten departments in the Faculty of Education, making it a total of 140 respondents which serves as the sample size of the study. A questionnaire on Influence of Bad Governance and Cybercrime on Undergraduate Students' Academic Performance (QIBGCUSAP) was used as instrument for data collection. The instrument was validated by two experts from the Department of Educational Foundations in Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. To enhance the reliability of the Instrument, the researchers employed test/re- test method and the reliability coefficient was 0.76. The data was analyzed using Cronbach alpha. Findings revealed that there is a strong link between cybercrime and academic performance. The findings of the study equally showed that bad governance negatively affects students’ academic performance. The study recommends that the University management should implement strict policies to combat cybercrime as well as promote transparency and accountability in governance. Finally, there should be constant awareness and educational programs to equip students with relevant knowledge on the dangers of cybercrime and negative effects of bad governance particularly in this age of instant gratification.
